How to create a free invoice online
- Replace the example business and client names. Add the billing contact details and a distinct invoice number.
- Enter the project title, issue date and agreed payment due date. Describe each service with its quantity and price before tax.
- Select USD or CAD and enter the tax rate that applies to your service. Reconcile any money already received, then enter that amount to calculate the remaining balance.
- Add agreed payment instructions and useful notes. Review the preview and use Copy invoice or Print / Save PDF. In the print dialog, choose your PDF destination or printer.
The document is prepared in your browser. It is not emailed, stored in an account or connected to a payment checkout. Save your copy before closing or reloading the page. Follow the full invoice creation guide.
Invoice example: a fixed project and hourly work
The editable example includes a website design package at USD $900 and two hours of revision support at $75 per hour. That gives a $1,050 subtotal. If a 5% tax rate applied, tax would be $52.50 and the invoice total $1,102.50. If you had already confirmed receipt of $200 for that invoice, the balance due would be $902.50.
The example starts with no tax or earlier payment entered. Replace the sample services and use the tax treatment that applies to your own work. A consultant can list sessions and preparation hours; a cleaner can list visits and an agreed fixed service. Include only work the client agreed to buy.
What should an invoice include?
An invoice is a request for payment. Include the supplier and customer details, an invoice number, dates, a description of the work, quantities, unit prices, currency, applicable tax, the total and the remaining balance. Add payment instructions and any reference the customer should include.
Specific invoice requirements depend on your business and location. This tool calculates the numbers you enter; it does not decide your tax rate or certify a document's compliance. Official starting points include the CRA's receipts and invoice guidance and IRS business recordkeeping guidance.
An estimate proposes scope and price before agreement. If you are still proposing the work, use the free estimate template instead.
Free invoice generator or saved workspace?
Use the free generator to prepare a standalone document without creating an account. Choose the optional DetailSprout workspace when you need client records, reusable services, saved estimates and invoices, project notes and reminders you review before sending. Your free-tool entries are not imported automatically.
Review Solo pricing and the eligible no-card trial. Online invoice payment links in the workspace require your own connected Stripe account to be ready. Creating an invoice or entering a received amount here does not process a payment or verify a transaction.
